About us
The Turning Point Academy was established in order to provide sixth through twelfth graders a viable alternative to traditional classroom education, conventional curriculums, and "mandated timeline" education. Students progress through subjects at their own pace. This enables them to make better grades, score higher on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, and qualify for college scholarships. Through outside activities such as Toastmasters, students learn to articulate their thoughts and ideas. Digital assignments, webinars, blogs, and digital coursework are incorporated in order to prepare students for dealing with the technology of the future. Students are responsible for managing their own time in much the same way they would run their own business. This equips them with skills that will last a lifetime -- goal-setting, planning, and mentoring.
The Turning Point Academy is affiliated with the New College Preparatory Academy, Inc. which is recognized by the college board (SAT professionals) as a secondary diploma granting institution (CEEB Code 440-226), and is listed on the National Roster of Secondary Schools by the Educational Testing Service. In addition, the Defense Department recognizes the NEW College Preparatory Academy as a "Tier 1" school and accepts its diploma.
The Turning Point Academy was founded by Carol and Marty Appelbaum in order to meet the needs of their own daughter. They were already owners of a world-renown teacher training company, www.atiseminars.org, that now trains over 50,000 teachers each year. Combining their own expertise in the field of education with the New College Preparatory Academy's (NCPA) well known curriculum, they were able to create a learning environment that has high standards and is proven to engage and inspire students.
WHile the school is currently housed in a large "boutique-style" home in Sugar Land, TX, it is classified as a private school because it uses NCPA's College Board certified private school curriculum.
