EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Extracurricular Elective Credit
Extracurricular Elective is earned by independent activities by the student. Credit is awarded for documented participation in fine arts, community service, business, vocational, and other related activities. These credits must be earned while the student is enrolled or after the student started the 9th grade.
Credit Award Guidelines
One-half (1/2) high school credit is awarded for documentation of at least THREE hours per week (on average) of activities for at least TWELVE weeks in the Fall or Spring academic semester. The twelve weeks do NOT have to be consecutive. This allows for time off, illness, or injuries.
One-half (1/2) high school credit is awarded for documentation of at least FOUR hours per week (on average) of activities for at least NINE weeks in the Summer academic semester. The nine weeks do NOT have to be consecutive. This allows for time off, illness, or injuries.
One-half (1/2) high school credit is awarded for documentation of at least 36 applied hours for a concentrated activity of event such as a summer mission trip, training program, military encampment, or project.
--Letter from the supervising authority indicating the start and end dates of the student's participation
--Log of activity dates and times (signed by the parents)
--Copy of printed activity or training schedule
--Portfolio or presentation of the activity
Membership and participation in certain formal organizations such as Civil Air Patrol, Volunteer Fire Department, Police Cadets, Business Clubs, Vocational Clubs, Drum Corps, Choirs, Music organizations, Drama groups, and similar organizations or activities can be used to earn elective credit with proper documentation.
Membership and participation in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, Sea Cadets, Explorers, 4-H, Church organizations, Political organizations, Social organizations, Fraternal organizations, and similar organizations cannot, in and of themselves, be used to earn elective credit. However, the activities performed as a member of these kinds of organizations can be used to earn elective credit with proper documentation. Examples would include a church mission trip, vocational activities, community service projects, and the like. Check with the mentor to get approval for these activities.
Individual activities such as computer programming, scrap booking, music performance, painting, sculpture, poetry, drawing, calligraphy, public speaking, and similar activities can be awarded elective credit with documentation, portfolio, or some form of a final product.
School related activities such as Yearbook, Student Publications, Peer Mentoring, Course Reviewing, and similar activities can be awarded elective credit with documentation.
Physical Education (PE) Credit
One and a half (1.5) high school credits in Physical Education (PE) are required for graduation. These are earned by independent application by the student. Credit is awarded for documented participation in fitness, athletic, and other PE related activities. These credits must be earned while the student is enrolled. In all these, check with the mentor to get approval for elective activities.
